Following his return from basic training, Pat McCormick was approached by a friend's father (a colonel with the 5th Special Forces Group) with a less than pleasant request - to help stand guard over 20 flag-draped coffins of fallen soldiers.
Agreeing to the request, McCormick soon realized the personal satisfaction derived from service to others.
"This event really had a profound impact on me," said McCormick, 57, Jefferson City. "It helped me understand the sacrifices made by others and started my desire to honor and assist my fellow veterans."
