2 in custody for JC burglary

At 4:02 P.M., Monday, Jefferson City police responded to the 900 block of Moreau Drive in response to a burglary in progress.

The property owner and other witnesses arrived at the residence and found two men at the house.

One subject was standing in the back yard when officers arrived and the other subject crawled out from underneath the rear garage door.

Both men fled on foot.

Responding officers began searching the area and located two men matching the description of the suspects on Dockery St.

They are identified as:

Willie Dee Howard, 42, a Cole County resident.

Matthew Robert Koenigsfeld, 20, a Jefferson City resident.

At the residence officers found that the suspects had cut all of the copper water lines in the basement and had damaged the water line, which was spilling water into the basement.

Howard is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of burglar's tools, and second-degree burglary. Howard is currently on probation for a conviction in a previous burglary.

Koenigsfeld is facing charges of possession of burglar's tools and second-degree burglary.

Howard and Koenigsfeld are being held in the Cole County Jail.
