Columbia signs agreement with American Airlines

The Columbia City Council has approved an agreement with American Airlines for service to Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth, setting aside more than $3 million to ensure the airline doesn’t take a loss in the first two years of service.

Columbia announced earlier this month that the deal had been reached with American Airlines for service out of Columbia Regional Airport, but was waiting on council approval, given in a special meeting Monday.

The deal was made possible through a two-year, $3 million minimum revenue guarantee, which protects the airline from any potential losses. Jefferson City and Cole County both contributed $100,000 to the minimum revenue guarantee fund.

But Columbia still will have to deal with some fallout from the agreement.
