1917 home presents special challenge

A strolling neighbor might come sit with Mary Jane Evans when she’s sitting on her stonecovered front porch. And schoolchildren on a field trip often wave while walking by.
The porch at 1210 Moreau Drive is Evans’ favorite place ... now.
After purchasing the nearly-century old home in August 2010, the Evans discovered a 17-feet drop below the crumbling, one-inch-thick porch. Oddly, the underground space was enclosed, leaving the question of why it was there.
Now secure with truckloads of gravel underneath, the porch is the perfect place to take in the by-gone-era feel of the Moreau Drive neighborhood, she said.
“I’ve had a long affair with this house,” Evans said.
She and her husband, Jerry, considered buying ....
