As Jefferson City High School senior Hughes Lee walked into speech and debate practice Monday afternoon, the rest of the students, only half-mockingly, hailed him as their king. He shushed them, but in a way, he is the school’s king.
Not only was Lee elected Homecoming King earlier this fall, he also earned a perfect score — a 36 — on the ACT this year. It’s tough to pull off. Of the 1.6 million students who took the test in 2011, only 705 — about .04 percent — earned a 36 on the test.
He downplayed the achievement and said he didn’t have a big celebration when he heard the news. “It was more of a smile, and then I went to go do homework or something,” he said.
