Teen overdoses on rise in Maries County

Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said his county is seeing a growing problem of teenagers overdosing on drugs. The latest incident occurred Monday when members of his office responded to a report of a teenager who had taken two entire boxes of cold medicine purchased at a local convenient store.

“This caused the teenager to have seizures, and then they became unresponsive,” Heitman said. The teenager was treated and released from a local hospital.

“We have also had two fairly recent fatalities where individuals have overdosed,” he added. “Substance use remains a leading cause of injury and death in young people. According to national reports, nine out of 10 American addicts started smoking, drinking or using drugs before the age of 18. Prescription and over the counter drugs can be just as deadly as meth or heroin.”
