Curtis Bohanan II, a Jefferson City police officer, and Christopher Suchanek, a Cole County sheriff's detective, were among eight public safety officers awarded the Missouri Medal of Valor on Thursday by Gov. Jay Nixon.

"The word icon is thrown around far too loosely," Nixon said from his Capitol office. "These eight officers, each of whom faced dangerous and threatening circumstances, acted without regard for their own safety and focused solely on protecting the public by responding swiftly and heroically."
