'Diabetic episode' triggered Mo. police standoff

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Police say a "diabetic episode" triggered a standoff with an armed suspect in north St. Louis.

Broadcaster KMOV (http://bit.ly/WVcRB4 ) reported that the man grabbed his shotgun and ordered relatives to leave his house shortly after noon Wednesday.

The man then locked himself inside and refused to leave his house for hours, prompting police to evacuate nearby homes.

After police used tear gas, the man surrendered and was taken to a hospital.

Police say the suspect's blood sugar levels were dramatically altered and he wasn't thinking clearly. No charges have been filed.
