Mid-Missouri drivers are now traveling over 88 improved bridges thanks to MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.
When state and local officials Thursday cut the ribbon to open the Route W bridge over Second Creek in Gasconade County, it marked the end of the program in central Missouri.
Billed as the largest bridge improvement effort in Missouri history, the Safe & Sound program began in February 2009 with the goal of improving 802 of Missouri's worst bridges in five years.
Statewide, the program is on track to be completed this month - two years ahead of schedule. Each county in Missouri had at least one bridge scheduled for improvement under Safe & Sound.
