St. Louis police chief to retire, join academia

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom is retiring after 24 years on the force, including four as chief, and will take a position with the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Isom made the announcement Monday. He will begin the new job at UMSL, his alma mater, on Jan. 1.

Mayor Francis Slay declined to speculate on who would become the new chief. State law requires that the St. Louis chief be chosen from among the ranks of captain or above.
