Indictment and arrest announced in 2011 JC sporting goods store fire

Jefferson City Fire officials announced Monday that Kurt A. Steidley, 52 - the owner of Everhart's Sporting Goods - was arrested Monday in Warrensburg, on a Cole County grand jury indictment charging him with second-degree arson for the Jan. 1, 2011, fire at Everhart's Sporting Goods, 2436 Missouri Blvd.

Steidley was released from the Warrensburg Police Department after posting a $25,000 cash-only bond.

In a news release, Fire Department spokesman Jason Turner noted the department had responded to a fire at the business at 7:46 p.m. on that New Year's Day.

They found heavy smoke throughout the building, with fire burning near the building's center.

The fire's cause was investigated by Jefferson City's Fire Department as well as the Missouri Division of Fire Safety and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The business had closed Dec. 24, 2010 - just over a week before the fire occurred.
