Coyote blamed for killing St. Louis Co. dog

HAZELWOOD, Mo. (AP) — Authorities believe a coyote is to blame in the death of a family pet in suburban St. Louis.

KMOV-TV (http://bit.ly/Teixme ) reports that the attack happened Sunday morning in Hazelwood. The homeowners told the TV station that they let their small dog outside for a few minutes, then found her dead in the woods behind the home. They saw a coyote fleeing from the area.

Neighbors say the attack has them concerned about their pets and children.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says coyotes are common to the area, but attacks on dogs are rare. The department says it will investigate and set traps if necessary since the incident happened in a residential area.

I wonder if the coyote was sick. Hopefully not rabies. Don't see why a coyoye would kill a little dog unless something was wrong with it.

A coyote will take a dog or cat or whatever is small enough without thinking twice. A Bobcat or mountain lion will typically run from even a small dog if it barks. I have read it is because the barking causes them physical pain. One of the strays that took up residence in my barn and became a farm dog for many years was a medium sized mutt but he had some serious issues with coyotes. He wouldn't enter a house for nothing except on those Winter nights when the coyotes came around in large numbers then he would come to the door and let me know he wanted inside. He would sleep right in front of the door until morning and then want right back out. Houses made him nervous but coyotes in large numbers made him look for security.

One way of hunting coyotes is to place a stuffed dog or cat toy in the woods and watch it. Coyotes will be drawn to it to see if it is a good snack. Once shot a coyote while it was carrying a cat it had killed.

Thank you connor and Littleinvestor. Now I see what happened. I didn't know coyotes would do that. Mean buggers but they do what's instinct. Have there been any cases of coyote's attacking people around here?

That's funny, I don't care who you are. Is Obama responsible for all those cougar attacks, too?

Three coyotes and two cougars where voting on what to have for dinner.

The Three coyotes said "There are three of us and this is a democracy so we vote to eat one of the cougars".

The two cougars decided it was time to end mob rule and each ate a coyote while the third one ran away with his tail between his legs.

The end.
