Curators eye YMCA discounts for students
Monday, November 19, 2012
Some Lincoln University students want to join Jefferson City’s Family YMCA — and the school’s curators said Friday that talks about discount memberships should continue between the school and the Y.
“Over the past few years, we’ve had several sports teams ... and members of the Student Government Association and ROTC cadets who have requested special membership privileges at the YMCA,” Chief Operating Officer Joe Lopez told curators.
More than 500 students signed a petition seeking a YMCA membership deal for LU students, and 64 percent of the students who voted on the idea last month approved it.
The Y has proposed a $60-a-semester — or $10 a month — addition to the student fees, which Lopez called “the highest discount ever afforded to any group in Jefferson City from the YMCA.”
