Your Opinion: Speak for yourself, not all Christians

Dear Editor:

I find it very interesting that a number of readers submitting letters to the editor insist they are able to speak for all Christians.

True, there are hundreds of Christian denominations.

True, many of those denominations believe in contradictory articles of faith and interpret the holy scripture in sharply contradictory ways.

True, neither the Catholic Pope, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention, nor the head of any other Christian denomination can speak for all Christians.

However, our letter writers in Jefferson City have that ability. I am sure I am not the only reader in this city who would appreciate people speaking of their own personal beliefs or of the beliefs of their denomination rather than attempting to represent the view of all Christians.

Issue-oriented letters to the editor in response to this or about other local topics are welcome. All letters should be limited to 400 words. The author's name must appear with the letter, and the name, address and phone number provided for verification. Letters that cannot be verified by telephone will not be published. Send letters for publication to editor@newstribune.com
