Helias pays tribute to local vets

Flanked on either side by an honor guard of football players, nine veterans from Jefferson City were honored Thursday by the faculty and students at Helias High School.

Held in Rackers Fieldhouse, the assembly was an opportunity for students to learn more about the sacrifices military personnel make on behalf of the country and thank the veterans who attended - as well as the ones who could not - for their service.

Helias Activities Director Doug Light said he was compelled to organize the event in memory of his father, Melvin Light, a World War II veteran who returned home from northern France, but who was never the same after the war.
