Memorial Day concert on tap at First Christian

The Monticello Mid-Missouri Men's Chorus and the Jefferson City Community Symphonic Band will hold a joint Memorial Day Concert for the first time today at First Christian Church.

The Monticello singers will open the concert at 1 p.m. under the direction of Carl Beach and accompanied by his wife Carol. Their daughter Robin Beach-Steinhaus will be a guest soloist and she is a member of the women's ensemble Liberté, directed by Marcia Ramatowski, which also will perform Monday.

The Navy Hymn will feature Dick Dalton as soloist and will remember Laughton Smith, a Jefferson City High School graduate, who died in the 1968 USS Scorpion sinking.

The Jubilant Sound handbell choir from First Christian will performer during intermission at 1:50 p.m. Directed by Terri Lloyd, they will play a patriotic medley based on the hymn "God of Our Fathers."

At 2 p.m. the community band will open with George Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band."

Other concert band tunes will include "America the Beautiful," "The Klaxon," "God Bless America" and "The Armed Forces Salute."
