Police: Man held girlfriend against her will

The Cole County Prosecutor’s office filed charges Friday afternoon against a 19-year-old man, after he reportedly held his former girlfriend against her will.

Authorities said David L. Jefferson, 19, Jefferson City, threatened the woman, 37, and forced her to go to his apartment.

Police said they were called at 11:11 a.m. Friday to go to an apartment in the 2200 block of Weathered Rock Road but, before they reached that first address, they were redirected to an apartment in the 500 block of East Elm Street because “the suspect had forced the victim into a vehicle” and driven her to his apartment.

The victim told officers she had told Jefferson he needed to vacate her apartment by the time she returned from an appointment. But when she arrived home, she said, Jefferson forced her into a bedroom and locked the door — then showed her a knife as he threatened her “with bodily harm.”

The victim, whom police did not name, said Jefferson then forced her to go to his apartment and, when she tried to escape, restrained her and dragged her back into the apartment.

Police said a member of Jefferson’s family tried to restrain the teen, in order to give the victim a chance to escape — but Jefferson was able to get loose and restrain the victim again.

As officers took Jefferson into custody, he resisted and, in the process, “kicked the side of a police car, damaging the door.”

Police said the victim had some minor injuries caused by being restrained.

Jefferson was charged with felonious restraint, felony resisting arrest, unlawful use of a weapon and second-degree property damage. His bond was set at $10,000.
