Man who shot himself hospitalized in serious condition

Patrol: Man shoots self after fleeing from traffic stop

A Callaway County man was listed in serious condition Friday evening at University Hospital in Columbia, after shooting himself while parked in a driveway near Millersburg.

He had been listed in critical condition Friday morning.

On Friday, the Missouri Highway Patrol still was not identifying the man, nor confirming the suspect is the same as a man named in some television reports.

Nor has the patrol confirmed the man's specific injuries, other than to say they were not life-threatening.

The patrol reported after the incident that a trooper attempted to stop the man about 2:45 p.m. Thursday for traffic charges, while he was traveling on Route F in Callaway County, between Fulton and Millersburg.

But the man refused to stop and the trooper began pursuing the vehicle.

The chase ended a short distance away, when the man pulled into a driveway on County Road 259 - north of Route WW and bordering the Mark Twain National Forest - and shot himself with a firearm.

No other injuries were reported.

The patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is continuing to investigate the incident.

No charges were filed in the case Friday, although Sgt. Paul Reinsch, the Troop F Information Officer, said charges might be filed "after all of the reports are in" and prosecutors can review them.
