YMCA center receives literacy grant

The YMCA Child Development Center in Jefferson City received a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. This grant will be used for the center's summer literacy program.

Children in six of the Child Development Center's classrooms will participate in a "Need to Read" summer reading program. This will include 60 children and their families who will receive take-home literacy packs with a journal and activities to encourage families to read with their children.

The goal is to have each class read 2,000 books by the end of the summer program. Each classroom will also receive a new listening center to expand in-class literacy areas.
