Lining the shaded schoolyard wall Thursday, kindergarteners at Callaway Hills Elementary School were sampling spinach and lettuce leaves they have grown themselves.
After the strawberry-enhanced salad, speech therapist Tina Wheeler served up “harvest” brownies for dessert. She substituted pureed spinach for the oil.
Since February, the kindergarteners have taken part in each aspect of the growing process. They started seeds in newspaper pots, which decomposed quickly when they planted their seedlings in the raised beds this spring.
