Three Scout leaders honored

Phil Baker, Cheryl Cobb and Wayne Medley, leaders in Boy Scouts of America’s Five Rivers District, earned the District Award of Merit award.

Baker, Jefferson City, ended a three-year term as district committee chairman. He made sure each district committee chair was filled with a capable and trained volunteer. He led the Friends of Scouting fundraising drives, which exceeded goals each year during his term. Baker also is active in the Community Christian Church and various civic organizations in Jefferson City.

Cobb, who lives in Holts Summit, is a Troop 2 committee member. She is the troop’s newsletter editor, and through her efforts, the troop newsletter has evolved from a one-page item to a multiple-page edition with two pictures. Cobb has served on the National Youth Leader Training staff and was on staff at Wood Badge, which is the premier training course for adult Scout leaders, for five years and as Scoutmaster for the 2011 course.

Medley, Jefferson City, has been an active Scout leader for about 20 years. He has been Cubmaster, assistant Cubmaster and den leader. Medley has served as Troop 11 advancement chair for seven years. He coordinated a 2009 trip to Sea Base in Florida and led the 2009 district Pinewood Derby. He serves on the district’s monthly Eagle board of reviews.
