Rush Limbaugh honored at Mo. Capitol
Monday, May 14, 2012
By DAVID A. LIEB Associated Press
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. May 14, 2012 (AP)
Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians on Monday during a secretive ceremony in the state Capitol as police stood guard to keep out any uninvited political opponents of the sometimes divisive radio show host.
Limbaugh, a native of Cape Girardeau in southeast Missouri, addressed a crowd of more than 100 Republicans during a closed-door event in the Missouri House chamber. Speaking from the chamber's dais, he thanked his family for their support throughout his career, denounced liberals and Democrats as "deranged," then helped lift a black curtain off a bronze bust of himself, which he hugged — head to head — for photographs.
The timing of the ceremony was kept secret until shortly before it occurred, and then only Republican lawmakers, other invited guests and the media were allowed into the chamber to watch — an attempt to avoid any public disruption after Limbaugh's selection was criticized by Democrats, some women's groups and other political foes.
Limbaugh, 61, arranged for a guest host to handle his radio show Monday so he could be at the Missouri Capitol. He repeatedly declared how humbled he was by the honor.
"I'm stunned. I'm not speechless, but close to it," Limbaugh said to the laughter of the friendly crowd. "I'm literally quite unable to comprehend what's happening to me today."
The talk show host was selected for the Hall of Famous Missourians by term-limited House Speaker Steven Tilley, a Republican who like Limbaugh is from southeast Missouri. Tilley wants to display Limbaugh's bust in the Capitol alongside other members of the Hall of Famous Missourians, including President Harry Truman, Mark Twain and Walt Disney — but that plan has already faced controversy.
Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon's administration released a memo Monday indicating that a state board — not the House speaker — has the authority to determine what items are displayed in the third floor Capitol Rotunda where the busts are located. House Minority Leader Mike Talboy, D-Kansas City, also asserted that Tilley has no legal authority to order Limbaugh's bust to be placed in the Capitol Rotunda.
"The secrecy and exclusion of the public demonstrates that even Republicans are embarrassed at honoring someone who recently called a female college student with whom he disagreed a 'slut' and a 'prostitute,'" Talboy said.
Limbaugh's selection for the Missouri honor was made public in early March, shortly after he made those comments about a female law school student after she testified before Democrats in Congress about health insurance for contraception. Limbaugh later apologized for his language, telling his radio listeners: "It was wrong."
Although Limbaugh but did not reference the incident Monday, Tilley alluded to Limbaugh's controversial comments while introducing him during the Capitol ceremony. In the past couple months, protesters have wheeled 600 rolls of toilet paper into the middle of Tilley's Capitol office encouraging him to "Flush Rush!" and have delivered about 35,000 petition signatures against Limbaugh's induction.
"He may say things that strike a nerve," Tilley said. "But that doesn't undo everything he's accomplished in his career, and it doesn't provide a reasonable excuse why he shouldn't be honored by his home state for his many accomplishments."
Limbaugh nearly let the occasion pass by without delivering a fresh political shot at his opponents.
After Limbaugh again expressed thanks for the honor, the Republican crowd applauded and he appeared to be done speaking. But then he praised Tilley — whom he said had "been under assault for wanting to do this" — and said of his critics: "They're deranged. They're literally deranged."

A secret ceremony no less. The X-Games of influence peddling winner for 2012 is little Stevie Tilley. A more disgusting display can only be seen at the statue itself. The janitors will be cleaning spit off the floor below that hideous visage until it comes down.

I wouldn't waste the spit. Did you read or hear ANYTHING about disruption or protests or violence? Nope, it's all in your imagination. The secrecy seems justifiable to people who do despicable things.

as a taxpaying citized of this state, it angers me that they are going to put a bust of that loudmouth in our capitol. I feel that we, the taxpayers, who are paying your salary , should have had a say in this matter. Last time I checked, this was a democracy. Steven Tilley, what you have done is unexcusable, and you have forever tainted our Hall od Famous Missourians, and I personally think you need to be impeached, or resign for your bad judgement!

Luckily, we live in a country where you can spout your comments and believe it or not, so can Rush Limbaugh. Do I agree with his comments, not always, but then I don’t agree with yours either. Just because you don’t like what he says, he is a Citizen of Missouri that is known nation-wide, what’s your claim to fame?

This story should read, today the Missouri State Capitol was secretly vandalized by the House Speaker who unveiled the bust of a woman hating "conservative". If your behavior is SO SHAMEFUL that you have to keep it a secret, maybe you shouldn't do it. Tilley is a forever a stain in Missouri history and a poster boy for term limits.

So you agree with Rush being there! Wow you aremore delusional than i thought! If you would want a racist, woman hating, just genuinely hateful person to be in a historical place that represents our state. I am personally ashamed of the state for putting him in there. ITS JUST RIDICULOUS AFTER ALL OF THE MISSOURIANS THAT DIDN"T WANT THIS THAT TILLEY WOULD JUST DO IT IN SECRET!!!! LIMBAUGH SHOULD BE EMBARASSED TO BE WHERE THE PEOPLE DON"T WANT HIM!!!! But its okay because it will mysteriously get bumped over and broke or just disappear in the middle of the night and that is if NIXON doesn't have it removed through the State Board that controls it!

The speaker can order and install the bust - it's an informal, traditional process. After that the Board of Public Buildings decides what is displayed. It's a matter of state law.

The words don't fit together very well. Specifically, the word "honored" is hard to justify in a situation where people feel obligated to do it in a secret ceremony because someone who disagrees with your choice of "honoree" might show up and do, uh, ...what?
MO4LIFE 1 year ago
I second that hkchas!!!! How are you being honored by a secret ceremony in public hall of the capitol to put a bust of you that is supposedly for the people of MO but yet the people of MO were not allowed to attend. I would like to see the legislatures contribution files to see just how much Limbaugh paid for this so called "honor"! We should even check Tilley's Bank account for a large deposit made in the last 3 - 6 months!
STEVEN TILLEY MADE ME REALIZE THAT TERM LIMITS ARE THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD. THE US LEGISLATURE NEEDS TO PUT THEM IN PLACE TOO SO THAT THERE ARE NO MORE CAREER POLITICIANS LIMIT THEM ALL TO TWO TERMS AND MOVE ON.!

The fact tha Mr.Tilley and his ceremony supporter's did not do this openly proves that they knew it wasn't a popular thing with the MAJORITY of voter's/ Missourians. Oh sure there are some who think ole Rush deserve's the recognition, but then again there are a lot of those who know different. It's not the first time Mo./Americian politicians promoted hate and regretfully it won't be the last time either. For me, it's not just that Rush is in the Hall of Famous Missourians, it's that he got there because of some slimey slithering back door home boy deal.
Thing is Tilley knew Rush could not go in the hall at the same time Dred Scott was being celebrated and enshrined. That's because Dred Scott promotes all that is good about humankind and Rush promotes all that is wrong! That being said....why is Rush in the Hall of Famous Missourians?

Missouri allowed him to do what? He was simply caught up in the political storm. Is that what you call the centuries of innocent people being butchered because of the color of their skin? Is that what you call the centuries of innocent families, men, women, boy's and girl's having their lives destroyed simply because some self serving racist had a dislike for people of color? A political storm...is that what it's called? Graceful whoever you are...whatever you are stay hidden because your have not got a clue on what is real.
As for what MISSOURI allowed, Missouri did nothing to help Mr Scott. Yet Mr. Dred Scott used the legal system...and because it was the legal system and not a gun, the public was forced by this young man of color to follow the law as it was written. Now the Justice's sitting on the Supreme Court provided a racist verdict, but that was what Missouri was expecting because in the eyes of Missouri...Dred Scott was never a human...he was a black piece of chattell property, to be owned. In fact Missouri was afraid that this PERSON OF COLOR was able to think and use his brains instead of physical force to seek freedom ...which he/Mr. Scott had every right to use..." I mean after all isn't that what the founder's of this nation used to gain their freedom from the British? Isn't force what was used to rob the Indians of their land? The answer is " YES", yet even though he knew this...Dred Scott also knew that him using his brain would prove more powerful. He knew by using his brain he would prove several things to the those in the world who insisted that he/the Negro was sub-human. By using the legal system/brain power Mr. Scott and his wife for that matter both proved the Negro was not the ignorant slug that many whites thought they were. The Scott's were shining examples of how even though the Negro was denied the equal opportunity to get an education, "they" the Negro was still able to master the very laws and basic intentions of freedom, justice and equality that many whites themselves were all to quick to forget about.
Graceful your attempt to stimey the reputation of a person like Dred Scdott while you champion the deplorable behavior of Rush Limbaugh speaks volumes of your character and up bringing. It has nothing to with race, but it does have everything to do with honesty, integrity, selfless sacarfice, championing right over wrong and basic decency. All of which SIr/Mam your "written comments indicate you lack". Be it past or present, the attemtp to dfown play the importance of Dred Scott was/is based on SKIN COLOR AND IGNORANCE...but "MY" comments about you are based on what YOU'VE written.

"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past are certain to miss the future." John F. Kennedy
wow 1 year ago
Spelchek..I read ya...but let's not forget...even though Ole JFK was a trend setter, he also spoke with "Fork Tounge". Also if anyone is going to be able to handle the future and benefit from all the positive changes...they had better darn sure know and accept the lessons that were learned from the past. Accept the good with the bad, but learning , accepting and admitting the past is a must...if positive progress is to be made and enjoyed. commng to grips with history is a must.
spelchek 1 year ago
"he also spoke with "Fork Tounge"[sic] -- They all do, even Obama. I think most people have a grip on the past. Our current black President and USAG say so. Mr. Limbaugh is no racist as you would have it. I listen to him and he is anything but what the liberal haters on here spout; without having heard a word I might add. Rush believes in the individuality and power of the human spirit given the resources needed to achieve their goals. Those resources are less government intervention in our daily lives. He despises seeing our fellow citizens lapping out of the hand of government and being demeaned in such a way. He finds it cruel that government (democrats) panders to this demographic and purposely wants them to be victimized and told they can't do better and government is the answer to fix it. He is genuinely inspired by people and does not see race, gender, ethnicity, etc...as obstacles to achieve greatness. Those of you who would love to see Rush thrown under the bus have no idea what you're talking about.

I cannot believe there are so many people in this city that jump on the liberal band wagon when it comes to butchering somebody on the right. Weather you like Rush or not he is a Missouri that has made a very big name for himself in society(both good and bad). There are people who say what Rush said and did was wrong. If it was I guess society doesn't care as much as they want to voice because he is still making tons of money and has one of the biggest followings around. That is why he was placed in the hall. Not because everybody loved everything he had to say,but because he was a Missourian who made a name for himself. I applaud Mr. Tilley For standing his ground and not giving in to political correctness. You can scream all you want that it should not have been done in private but I can tell you without a doubt the service would have been disrupted if it was public because all people care about is what they think. To the liberals that are screaming If Kennedy would have been from Missouri instead of Mass. would you have wanted him inducted into the hall?
asb 1 year ago
Don't misunderstand why he's in the hall. Steve Tilley kissed up to him, made a promise, and there he is. Pandering of the worst sort, to the worst of panderers. Yes Grace, he represents something importantant in America . . . the sneering, bullying, denigrating, and altogether disgusting side of each of us . . . everything your Christ condemned.
gofish 1 year ago
You are spot on in your assessment of Graceful. Her vocabulary is frought with the words "political gamesmanship", "liberals", and "leftists". It's the same brand of hate that Rush preaches to his followers. Maybe they all drink the same Kool-Aid.
asb 1 year ago
Graceful is genuine. There are actual beliefs behind the posts and ideas. I don't think much of them with all the fear and blame, but they're actual beliefs held dearly. Rush Limbaugh is phoney. He learned the art of derision as a child, learned to market that skill as a young adult, and has parleyed the barking sneer at anything warm and compassionate into a fortune. He IS one of the most famous sons of Missouri, but the nature of his spew disqualifies his selection to the status Tilley has attempted to establish for him. He is NOT the voice of American conservatives. He is the voice of American hate and fear, raised for hours every day to a market created for and by those wishing to frighten the country into a mean and nasty state of compliance.

"Rush is genuine. He says what the backbone of this country believes", Lord help us if what he says is the backbone of what this country truly believes, and you say we should fear Obama??? Oh Lord.
spelchek 1 year ago
Rush isn't President and doesn't have control of the treasury; but you already knew that.
newone 1 year ago
And your point?
spelchek 1 year ago
Let me slow down for you. You compared what Rush believes to fearing Obama. Rush is an entertainer, Obama is leader of the free world. Rush has zero power, Obama has complete power. What Rush says is not important in the grand scheme of things, what the POTUS says is important in the grand scheme of things. Got it now?
wow 1 year ago
Sickandtired...the Klan, Panther's and Taliban have raised a lot of money and also have a huge following...do the leaders of those groups deserve to be celebrated? What about David Duke or Louis Frakhan do they deserve to be recognized in celebration? I agree, if the Rush ceremony had been public, the PUBLIC would have protested against it, but after all isn't the PUBLIC who politicians work for. So if the MAJORIY of Missourian's said "No" to the Rush Busk...then should not Mr. Talley and crew have listened and complied with those wishes. Same would be said "IF" the majority was for the Rush Busk...the thing is...by doing this in behind the door deal...now it appears as if this truly controversial piece of Cow Paddy and Mr. Tally care more about promoting Rush's well known brand of hate, more so than they care about the obiding by these famous words..."The will of the people shall remain supreme"...I seem to have read similiar words which are enscribed some where in the State Capitol...perhaps Mr. Tilley should know that.

I'd have no more use for Rush's approach to holding a listener if he were a progressive. Some would argue that progressive perspective can't be delivered in Rush's style . . . maybe not, but I wouldn't listen to it, or honor it, if it were possible.

You are soooo right. When soldiers are fighting, they hide in secret places all the time, for the sake of strategy. The Speaker of the House is fighting the good fight and his strategy caught those who choose to be an "enemy" off guard. He completely and smartly destroyed their chance to interrupt the ceremony. All of their hatred was wasted. All of their protest signs wasted. All of the words they wanted to yell, they never got a chance to yell them. That's got to sting them bad as well. Haters love nothing more than the chance to show their hate and jealousy.

"Tilley) hung in, he was tough, laughed at them when they called his office, which is what you have to do, because they’re deranged," "They literally are deranged, our friends, so-called friends on the other side of the aisle, are deranged...this is where my family now forgets I’m here.” as stated by Rush Limbaugh. And the guest in the secret ceremony laughed with him while he spoke. Gee, Im just not getting what is so funny about Tilley laughing when ordinary citizens call his office to express their opinon. There really is nothing funny about it. Another disappointment as people hope for something, anything to help turn the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression around and put people back to work. God have mercy on America and Missouri.

If you paid more attention you would know that quote was about the Gov's office and democrats on the other side of the aisle. Not voters, like you and Mr. Chase would have us believe. Trust me, Rush knows democrats better than he knows every inch of his glorious naked body.

Trust me. Thousands of people contacted Tilley's office and other Legislative Leader to express their opposition to this including our household. As far as I know this country is still a free democractic society and the will of the people should mean something. But apparently not. Hopefully these thousands of people who opppse this secret ceremony in the state Capitol will be laughing all the way to the voting booth when these tone deaf leaders are up for election.
sickandtired 1 year ago
seeno there were also thousands of people who contacted Tilley's office and told him to stand his ground and not to give into LIberal political correctness. Seems like the will of the people goes both ways and yes it does mean something- just not neccessarily what you want it to mean. Freedom of speech is still a freedom here. If you don't like Rush don't listen to him. There are millions of other people out there that do listen to him.

Did any of you hear the caller from California a while back? She called into Rush's radio program and identified herself as a black woman who is a member of a Black business associatrion/organization. Didn't catch the name. Anyway, she said if he (Rush) would bend over, they - the people in the organization -would gladly kiss his (Rush's) posterior. She went on to say how they LOVE HIM! She was serious.,,, and so happy and excited to be saying these things to him.
My best guess is people don't listen to what he is saying. He believes in people - as do most/many conservatives. I personally do not always agree with the way he says things....he is at times inspiring and I actually believe he is humble - in a bold sort of way. He is confident - maybe that is what people don't like about him. Once I really sat down and listened to him, I heard his message. When people call him racist and all the other things - welll - they are really just talking about themselves.
