Another case of E. coli suspected in Cole County

The Cole County Health Department is investigating a third possible case of E. coli, and the cause for the transmission of the disease is still not clear.

The third possible case was reported Friday. The first two cases were reported in late April.

Health Director Marie Peoples said these cases have occurred in various locations, so there was no one area they’ve focused on.

One was downgraded to a suspect case when state health officials couldn’t confirm the disease’s presence, but the other case was confirmed to have been the disease.

Health officials did say the one confirmed case was not connected to the meat E. coli outbreak that was reported in Howard County recently.

They also said there was some evidence that the Cole County cases might have been transmitted between people.

Health officials did not say the age or gender of those who have been affected.
