Your Opinion: Service praised

Dear Editor:

I just returned from taking advantage of a great, free service being offered by Jefferson City and Cole County: household hazardous waste collection and disposal.

I'm sure every homeowner in the city and county could search their basements and garages and find old cans of solvent-based paints, stains and insecticides that should never be placed in the trash and deposited in landfills.

I had an extensive collection of these items as well as an old jerry can filled with used lawn mower oil and solvents I used to rinse paint brushes over the years. It's just part of being a homeowner. The folks at the collection site took it all - and even emptied the jerry can and gave it back to me.

I commend the city and county for providing this convenient and critical service. It's available on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month through October. Just call 634-6410 to schedule a drop-off time. It's such a simple way to dispose of hazardous items in an environmentally responsible manner. So search your basements and get rid of that hazardous crud the right way, at the right price - free.
