Boy, 2, leaves KC motel, hit and killed on highway

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Authorities say a 2-year-old boy wandered from a Kansas City motel and was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident.

Police arrived about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and found the fatally injured boy. Officers believe he was sideswiped by a vehicle, and the driver may not have realized a child had been hit.

The motel is less than a half-mile from the suburb of Raytown. The child was struck less than a quarter of a mile from the motel.

Police say a woman driving on the highway saw the boy running in lanes. She turned her vehicle around and returned to the area where she had spotted the child. By then, he had been hit.

The boy and his family were visiting the area. Their hometown was not immediately released.
