Friday's American League Capsules

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Derek Jeter hit a two-run homer, CC Sabathia went eight innings for the third straight time and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on an encouraging Friday night.

It began with closer Mariano Rivera's announcement that he plans to return from a devastating knee injury rather than retire, and ended when David Robertson struck out the side in the ninth to give Sabathia (4-0) his fourth straight victory.

Jeter singled and scored on Mark Teixeira's homer in the first inning, and then broke the game open with his fifth homer during a four-run seventh. Jeter hit only six homers last year, his fifth coming on Sept. 4. He's batting a robust .404 so far this season.

All the damage came against Royals left-hander Bruce Chen (0-4), who has lost four straight after getting saddled with a pair of no decisions to start the year.

Rivera told his teammates prior to the game that he plans to have surgery to repair a torn ACL and damaged meniscus in his right knee. The injury occurred Thursday night when baseball's career saves leader was shagging fly balls during batting practice.

RAYS 7, ATHLETICS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Price struck out 12 over eight strong innings and Jose Molina hit his first homer of the season to lead the Tampa Bay past Oakland for its sixth straight win.

The Rays, who are a major league-best 19-8, improved to 13-1 at home and won for the 12th time in 13 games overall.

Price (5-1) threw 106 pitches while allowing an earned run, three hits and a walk. He is the second AL pitcher to win five games this season, joining teammate James Shields, who got his fifth victory Wednesday.

Joel Peralta picked up his second save.

Tyson Ross (1-2) had his second straight rough outing, giving up seven runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings. Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp was placed on the disabled list with an inner-ear infection.

ORIOLES 6, RED SOX 4, 13 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Davis drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the 13th inning and Baltimore outlasted Boston.

Mark Reynolds, who hit his first homer of the season in the third, added a sacrifice fly in the 13th and Jim Johnson set down the Red Sox down in order to end the game after 4 hours, 37 minutes.

Troy Patton (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Johnson earned his eighth save. Baltimore has won nine of 11, extending Boston's losing streak to three.

Franklin Morales (0-1) took the loss. Boston has dropped eight of its last nine home games.

Adrian Gonzalez had three hits for the Red Sox, who took three different leads but couldn't hang on to any of them.

BLUE JAYS 4, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Henderson Alvarez pitched a six-hitter for his first major league shutout and Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer to help Toronto beat Los Angeles.

The Blue Jays handed Ervin Santana (0-6) his sixth loss in as many starts this season and kept slumping Albert Pujols homerless in a game that took just 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Alvarez (2-2) threw only 97 pitches, striking out three and walking one. The 22-year-old right-hander has won back-to-back starts after going winless in his previous nine.

It was the fourth consecutive complete-game shutout at Angel Stadium, including the no-hitter by Angels ace Jered Weaver and a series-opening three-hitter by Toronto's Brandon Morrow.

Santana allowed three runs and three hits over eight innings with 10 strikeouts. But the Angels have been shut out in each of his last five outings.

Pujols' career-worst home run drought reached 33 games and 137 at-bats after he went 0 for 4, dropping his average to .194.

INDIANS 6, RANGERS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Johnny Damon hit a two-run triple in his first home game with Cleveland and Jeanmar Gomez pitched seven strong innings against Texas.

Gomez (2-1) gave up seven hits and three runs as Cleveland won for the fourth time in five games. Texas has lost five of seven, but still leads the AL West.

Shin-Soo Choo and Jack Hannahan homered off Colby Lewis (3-1) to help the Indians take an early lead. Choo's two-run shot snapped an 0-for-14 slump and was his first homer since Aug. 23.

Damon's drive off the wall in center was nearly caught by Josh Hamilton, who returned to the Rangers' lineup after missing three games because of a sore back.

Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his 10th consecutive save. He is perfect since blowing the save in the season opener April 5.

Texas had won 11 of its previous 12 games at Progressive Field. Lewis had won six straight dating to Sept. 9, the longest active streak in the AL.

TIGERS 5, WHITE SOX 4

DETROIT (AP) - Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Detroit a win over Chicago.

The White Sox led 4-2 after Gordon Beckham's tiebreaking, two-run shot in the seventh, but the Tigers got a run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera. After Alex Avila's one-out single in the ninth, Peralta ended it with a homer to right-center off Matt Thornton (1-1).

Jose Valverde (2-0) pitched the ninth for the win. Avila also hit his fourth homer.

Chicago starter Jake Peavy, coming off consecutive complete games, allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead for him.

Detroit outfielder Delmon Young was reinstated from the restricted list following a seven-day suspension, but he didn't play. Young was arrested last week and accused of yelling anti-Semitic epithets in New York.

TWINS 3, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Joe Mauer's two-out RBI single in the seventh inning helped Minnesota rally to beat Seattle, handing the Mariners their seventh straight loss.

The Twins snapped a 25-inning scoreless streak when they scored three runs in the seventh as Seattle's bullpen was unable to hold a 2-0 lead after 6 1-3 strong innings from starter Jason Vargas.

Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) struggled through four batters and made a costly throwing error that allowed the tying run to score. Mauer followed with a single up the middle that glanced off the glove of shortstop Brendan Ryan. The Twins won for the second time in 11 games.

Carl Pavano (2-2) needed just 69 pitches to get through six innings. Matt Capps worked the ninth for his fifth save.
