Wednesday's American League Capsules

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jered Weaver pitched the second no-hitter in the majors in less than two weeks, completely overmatching Minnesota and leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-0 win over the Twins on Wednesday night.

Weaver struck out nine and walked one. The Twins never came close to getting a hit against the All-Star right-hander.

Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox threw a perfect game against Seattle on April 21.

Weaver (4-0), a California native who played at Long Beach State, quickly retired Jamey Carroll on a routine fly and struck out Denard Span looking to begin the ninth.

Weaver then got Alexi Casilla to lift a long fly that right fielder Torii Hunter easily caught at the warning track. The Angels' ace watched his Gold Glove outfielder make the play, then put his hands on his head as the Angels rushed out to mob him.

His gem complete, Weaver hugged his wife, his dad and his mom, who was crying on the field.

ORIOLES 5, YANKEES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Jake Arrieta pitched eight innings of five-hit ball, and the Orioles ended Ivan Nova's 15-game winning streak with a victory over the Yankees.

Matt Wieters homered and hit an RBI double, Nick Markakis also connected and Baltimore earned a rare series win in New York with a team pitching effort not seen since the days of Jim Palmer and Mike Flanagan.

The Orioles lost the first game of the series 2-1 and won the middle game 7-1. With Arrieta's effort, the Orioles held the Yankees to two runs or fewer in three straight games in the Bronx for the first time since 1978, when Don Stanhouse joined Palmer and Flanagan in accomplishing the feat.

RAYS 5, MARINERS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Sean Rodriguez and Luke Scott homered for Tampa Bay, helping Rays right-hander James Shields become the AL's first five-game winner with a victory over the Mariners.

Shields (5-0) allowed four runs and five hits, walked four and struck out 11 over six innings to win his sixth straight decision over two seasons - matching the longest winning streak of his career. Kyle Seager homered twice off the 2011 All-Star, driving in all of Seattle's runs.

Rodriguez hit a two-run homer off Blake Beavan (1-4) in the third. Scott's solo shot off the Seattle starter glanced off centerfielder Michael Saunders' glove before clearing the wall to snap a 4-4 tie in the sixth.

ATHLETICS 4, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Brandon McCarthy beat an AL East opponent once again, holding Boston to one run over 6 2-3 innings as the Athletics defeated the Red Sox.

Seth Smith drove in a pair of runs for Oakland. The A's, who started the day with the majors' worst batting average and fewest runs in the AL, took two of three games from the Red Sox.

Boston has lost seven of its last eight in Fenway Park.

McCarthy (2-3) allowed five hits, walked three and fanned four. He improved to 8-0 with a 3.34 ERA since 2009 against AL East clubs.

BLUE JAYS 11, RANGERS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run homer, Kelly Johnson added a two-run drive and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Texas, giving the Rangers consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Yunel Escobar had three hits, including a bases-loaded triple in a six-run fourth inning, as the Blue Jays took two of three from the AL West-leading Rangers. Texas has not won a series in Toronto since sweeping a two-game set in April 2008.

Ricky Romero (4-0) won for the fourth time in five starts, giving up five runs and six hits in eight innings. The left-hander walked three and struck out a season-high six.

ROYALS 3, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Chris Getz's infield single in the ninth inning put Kansas City ahead, and the Royals held on to beat the Tigers.

Joaquin Benoit (0-1) gave up a double to Mike Moustakas, who advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Getz hit a grounder that was too deep into the hole for shortstop Jhonny Peralta to make a strong enough throw.

Tim Collins (1-0) got Prince Fielder to fly out to the warning track in left and struck out Ryan Raburn in the eighth for the victory after Detroit tied the game on Brennan Boesch's two-run homer.

Jonathan Broxton gave up a one-out single and got Andy Dirks to ground out into a game-ending double play for his fourth save in five chances for the Royals.

INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Santana and Travis Hafner homered to lead the Indians to a win over the White Sox.

Santana hit his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth inning that landed well behind the Indians' bullpen in right field. Hafner added a two-run shot in the ninth.

Jack Hannahan doubled home Michael Brantley with the go-ahead run in the eighth off Addison Reed.

Four Cleveland relievers combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Josh Tomlin, extending the bullpen's shutout streak to 15 2-3 innings. Joe Smith (1-0) picked up the win and Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.
