Councilwoman wants to trap, euthanize, deer

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A Cape Girardeau city council member believes she's come up with a better way to manage the growing deer population: Trap and euthanize them, then harvest the meat to feed the hungry.

Loretta Schneider told the Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/H4LDC2) that she plans to present the idea as a compromise to a proposal to allow bow hunting of deer inside city limits.

Schneider says her plan is more humane. Upon capture, the deer would be euthanized using a captive bolt gun, the meat going to food banks.

Russell Duckworth of the Missouri Department of Conservation says trapping removes concerns about errant arrows. But the cost is higher and the process isn't always as effective as hunting.
