Grand jury hands down indictments

The Cole County grand jury met this week and handed down a number of indictments, sending cases on to the circuit division for possible trials.

Those charged included:

• A man believed to have killed a man in an Apache Flats mobile home park last December.

Jose Hurtado, 22, California, is facing a second-degree murder charge in the killing of Francisco Navarro.

The sheriff’s department reported Navarro had gotten out of a truck to help its driver, Jesus Hernandez, who was being assaulted at 5101 W. Business 50.

The dispute apparently involved a complaint on how loud the muffler was on Hernandez’ truck, and how he had been driving his vehicle.

Officers said Hurtado shot Navarro once in the chest with a 9mm pistol.

• A Jefferson City woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars of lottery tickets from September through October 2011.
