Tuesday's MLB Spring Training Capsules

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee definitely looks ready for the regular season.

Lee pitched six scoreless innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 exhibition victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Scott Podsednik ended the game with a two-out solo homer in the ninth inning.

Lee allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one. The left-hander also hit for the first time this spring and doubled in his final at-bat.

The 33-year-old Lee will make one more spring start this Sunday before taking the ball in the second game of the regular season on April 7 in Pittsburgh.

With Jeff Karstens throwing in a minor league game back in Bradenton, the Pirates went with all relievers. Chris Resop, designated as the starter, allowed two runs and three hits in two innings.

RED SOX 8, RAYS 0

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Josh Beckett pitched one-hit ball for five innings, leading Boston to the win.

Beckett struck out five and walked three. Relievers Scott Atchison, Franklin Morales and Mark Melancon combined to pitch the final four innings, allowing two hits and fanning four.

Cody Ross hit a three-run homer in the second. He leads the Red Sox with four home runs this spring.

With Tampa Bay's James Shields pitching in a minor league game, reliever Fernando Rodney started for the Rays and threw one hitless inning. Joel Peralta gave up Ross' home run.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 1

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - Heath Bell pitched a hitless inning to earn his first save for Miami.

Bell, who signed a $27 million, three-year contract with the Marlins over the winter, struck out two and walked none.

Ricky Nolasco pitched 6 1-3 innings to become the first Miami starter to reach the seventh this spring. He allowed nine hits, but limited the Nationals to one run.

Washington outhit the Marlins 11 to eight but all 11 hits were singles.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez recovered from a rough first inning for the Nationals and struck out six batters in five innings. He was charged with three runs - all in the first - and seven hits.

RANGERS 10, PADRES (SS) 9

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Mike Napoli hit his first two home runs of the spring and Ian Kinsler had three hits, leading Texas to the win.

Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus left with a tight right hip flexor muscle. Manager Ron Washington said he'll hold Andrus out of the lineup Wednesday but plans to start him Thursday night against San Francisco.

San Diego starter Cory Luebke gave up five runs and eight hits over 4 1-3 innings. Luebke had allowed only three runs in 14 innings during his four previous starts.

Jeremy Hermida homered on consecutive pitches in the first and third for the Padres. Jeff Gyorko, Yasmani Grandal and Andy Parrino also went deep for San Diego.

Joey Butler tripled home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a wild pitch to win it.

CUBS 7, REDS 4

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos strained his left calf, providing another pitching concern for the Reds.

The Reds' No. 2 starter walked off the mound after throwing a pitch in the middle of the fifth inning. The Reds said he is day to day.

The injury came three days after the Reds learned that closer Ryan Madson needed reconstructive elbow surgery.

Matt Garza was scheduled to pitch six innings for the Cubs, but was taken out after the first two batters in the fifth reached. Garza gave up two runs and seven hits.

Former Red Dave Sappelt hit a three-run home run off Clayton Tanner in the ninth inning.

BLUE JAYS 4, YANKEES 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Kyle Drabek threw five scoreless innings, outpitching CC Sabathia and leading Toronto to the victory.

Drabek, competing for a spot in Toronto's rotation, allowed five hits. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked two.

Sabathia, set to start on opening day for the Yankees, gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. The left-hander will make his final exhibition start Sunday in the first major league spring training game at the Miami Marlins' new ballpark.

New York center fielder Curtis Granderson didn't play due to a sore right elbow. General manager Brian Cashman said the move was precautionary and added that Granderson will have an MRI on Wednesday.

ASTROS 14, TIGERS 7

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - Austin Jackson hit an inside-the-park home run and Brennan Boesch also connected for Detroit before Houston rallied for the win.

Both Detroit homers came off Wandy Rodriguez, who gave up five runs in six innings.

Brian Bogusevic and Brian Bixler each hit a two-run homer for Houston. Jason Castro and Jose Altuve each had two hits and scored twice.

The Astros were down 5-0 before coming back in the second inning against Andy Oliver.

One of the candidates for the fifth spot in Detroit's rotation, Oliver gave up six earned runs and seven hits in three innings.

BRAVES 7, METS 5

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - Freddie Freeman homered twice, Michael Bourn also went deep and Atlanta beat New York in a matchup of teams that will meet next week on opening day.

Both clubs rolled out pitchers who are not expected to make the starting rotation when the season begins.

Freeman homered in the seventh inning and again in the ninth, giving him five homers in exhibition play. Bourn hit a three-run homer drive off Mets starter Chris Schwinden.

Lucas Duda homered for the Mets and David Wright, in the lineup for a second straight day after making his spring debut Monday, had a sacrifice fly.

Braves starter Buddy Carlyle gave up two runs and three hits in four innings.

WHITE SOX 7, INDIANS 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings.

Brent Morel hit a two-run drive for his first spring homer and Paul Konerko had two doubles for the White Sox, who scored three runs in the fourth.

Zach Stewart, a candidate for the White Sox bullpen, allowed a run and three hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.

Alejandro De Aza also hit his first spring homer for the White Sox, a two-run shot off Robinson Tejeda.

ROYALS 9, BREWERS 7

PHOENIX (AP) - Eric Hosmer homered twice and drove in four runs to power Kansas City to the victory.

Yuniesky Betancourt, Mike Moustakas and Max Ramirez also connected for the Royals.

Bruce Chen, who allowed 10 runs and 10 hits in his previous start, allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. Chen will be the Royals' opening-day starter on April 6 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Yovani Gallardo allowed four runs and six hits in five innings for the Brewers.

Mat Gamel and Alex Gonzalez homered for Milwaukee.

ANGELS 5, GIANTS 3

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Angels starter Brad Mills pitched six strong innings.

The game was delayed in the ninth inning when a fan was hit by a piece of a broken bat from the Angels' Mark Trumbo. Paramedics were called, and the fan, who was seated behind the Angels' third-base dugout, was taken for medical attention. She was able to walk out of Scottsdale Stadium, moments before Alexi Amarista's three-run double off Javier Lopez broke a 2-2 tie.

Giants ace Tim Lincecum was solid but admitted to some frustration about trying to lock in the control of his fastball. He gave up two runs and five hits in five innings.

Mills allowed two runs and four hits. The 27-year-old left-hander likely will start the season at Triple-A Salt Lake City.

PADRES (SS) 6, DODGERS 5

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Juan Rivera homered, doubled and singled to push the Dodgers to the win.

Rivera hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and an RBI double during a three-run seventh against Micah Owings. Matt Kemp doubled and drove in two runs for the Dodgers and Andre Ethier had two hits, including an RBI triple.

Yonder Alonso hit an RBI double, singled and walked for the Padres. Cameron Maybin singled home a run and stole a base.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, ROCKIES 3

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin threw five no-hit innings, continuing his impressive spring.

Corbin struck out three and walked two while lowering his spring ERA to 0.57. He also went 2 for 2 with a triple and a RBI.

Geraldo Parra added two hits, including a triple for Arizona.

Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed 10 hits and six runs, four earned, in six innings. He also had the Rockies' first hit of the game, a single off Craig Breslow in the sixth inning.

TWINS 5, ORIOLES 0

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - The Twins scored four runs off Japanese left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada and held the Orioles hitless until the eighth inning.

Making his first start since being signed in the offseason as a free agent, Wada was pulled after three innings because of a high pitch count. He threw 62 pitches, including 30 in a three-run second.

Wada signed a two-year, $8.15 million contract over the winter. He is competing with Brian Matusz for the fifth spot in the Orioles' rotation.

Twins right-hander Anthony Swarzak, making his first start after four relief appearances, pitched 3 2-3 innings.

The Orioles were hitless until Robert Andino doubled off Glen Perkins with one out in the eighth. It was Baltimore's only hit of the game.
