Businesses express opposition to annexation
Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Commercial businesses included in the Meadows by the Club annexation are not happy about the proposal to come into Jefferson City.
And hoteliers already are planning court action if the annexation process continues.
At a Tuesday public hearing on the annexation proposal, Vivek Puri, of the Puri Law Firm and representative for the Hampton Inn and Comfort Suites, said the businesses would not see any benefits by coming into the city and said they were being brought in purely for added tax revenue.

Another public meeting that I had not heard about?? Also, I can only imagine that these businesses would express opposition, since that really have no mechanism to fight the inevitable.

Where's tort reform when we really need it? This is a perfect example of a nuisance lawsuit - and it's being threatened by a business. This one is more frivolous than suing McDonald's after you burn your crotch with their hot coffee that you put between your legs.
Alert the Associated Industries of Missouri, alert the Farm Bureau, alert the GOP, and by all means alert the Chamber of Commerce!

tonto how is this a more frivolous lawsuit than McDonald's? in That case you are rite suing because you burned yourself is stupid- but these guys all suing because all the city wants is more money in their pockets. They did not build in the city, they did not ask for the city to take their area over. As There is no win-win situation here, The company will loose a lot of money and get nothing out of it. But I am guessing you are part of the good ole boys club that Jeff City has around so you are not gonna disagree with anything "your boys" want.

The lawsuit is frivolous because there is no substance to it. The hotel company's allegation is not enough even if it was true, and there are lots of reasons besides a little tax revenue for Jefferson City to annex the area around those two hotels. If you wanted to hear about them you would have read the other articles about the annexation.

As a person involved in the annexation, I would like to put my two cents worth in. Our city administrator assures us it isn't about the tax money that would go to the City and be funnelled to the Convention and Visitors Bureau, but it's about "Leveling the playing field". I don't understand when the City of Jefferson or the State of Missouri were put in charge of leveling the playing field when it comes to "For Profit" businesses. He said the reason the two hotels are being annexed is because other hotels in Jefferson City want them in the city to level the playing field. Where will this stop? What about the smoke shops that are just outside the city limits? Should we annex them to be competitive with the ones located inside Jefferson City? What about antique stores? Seems to me the hotels and our City Administrator should have thought about a level playing field before they pushed this 7% Lodging tax through. They went on to say that annexation makes the city more viable, more businesses make the city more attractive to other businesses locating here. If that is true, why are they not annexing the 15 businesses and several homes along Country Club Drive just West of Rainbow? Why are they not annexing the for profit business right next door to one of the hotels (on the West side).
If the City of Jefferson put as much effort into bringing in new business and industry as they do in raising taxes and annexing existing businesses that don't want to be annexed the city might just grow.

But our City Adminstrator told me at least twice the tax revenue wasn't enough to worry about. It is just evening the playing field. OMG - He wouldn't tell me something that isn't really the truth would he?
I guess he is studying the Socialist handbook, we should make everyone equal, Comrade.

JCLifer, I didn't know you were a Stand-up comedian! LOL. We will continue to get our electric through Three Rivers, already paying for trash service. Our fire service will be 5-6 miles further away and as for Police coverage, they say they are already spread too thin. Sounds like a deal.
I guess thats what you were implying. Thanks for confirming what I already suspected.
