Regional library board wants 10-cent levy hike

The Missouri River Regional Library board has recommended putting a 10-cent levy increase on the August ballot to help make repairs to an aging library and to meet rising day-to-day operating expenses.

At a meeting Tuesday of the Missouri River Regional Library (MRRL) Board, the governing board recommended that the two taxing entities — Osage Library Board and the Cole County Board/Jefferson City — ask voters in the two counties to approve a 10-cent levy increase.

Yup, we need to vote on another tax increase. Do we need to list all of the recent rate increases and mention the area's stagnant wages?

How about instead of wasting our money on brick and mortar relic library, we invest in providing all citizens free wi-fi broadband access.

Schools in other communities are adopting e-readers for each student instead of expensive textbooks that are obsolete as soon as they come out.

Libraries will soon become little museums of antique obscure books that are not available for download.

This tax is as dead as the Transformation tax and the law enforcement tax increase. Until wages start rising considerably around here, these tax oncreases will be voted down over and over. People around here are hurting and struggling to pau their utilities, gasoline, food, groceries. health insurance , etc.

All citizens have access to free wi-fi at the library, regardless of if they have a library card or live in the area. The library has had this for years! The library also checks out downloadable books and audio books to all patrons with a valid library card, for FREE. You should know what you speak of before posting it for all to see.

I am talking about city-wide free wi-fi access 24/7 for all residents at their homes like some cities provided, not limited access in just one building.

Libraries are dying. World wide web is the way to go.

What else would you like the taxpayers to provide you for free, cell phone, cable tv, transportation, etc? If you want it, pay for it.
