All-district basketball teams announced

Several area players were named to the Central District basketball teams released today by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The Jefferson City Jays had two players selected to the 14-player Class 5 team. The Jefferson City Lady Jays were part of a two-team show on the Class 5 girls team.

Rock Bridge, which captured the Class 5 state title, put five players on the 14-person squad, while the Lady Jays were close behind with four.

The Helias Crusaders had three players capture individual honors on the Class 4 boys team, and they also had the district's Coach of the Year in Josh Buffington.

It was a similar story on the Class 4 girls team, but the Helias girls went one better with four players honored, and the Lady Crusaders' Doug Light was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

A whopping 13 area players were named to the Class 3 boys team. Among them, the Southern Boone Eagles had three honorees, Blair Oaks had a pair of first-team honorees, California had two first-team picks, the Fatima Comets had two players selected, and Eugene had two players honored.

California's Blair Scanlon was selected as the Coach of the Year after leading the Pintos the quarterfinal round.

The number was even higher on the Class 3 girls team, as 14 area players made the squad.
