MEXICO, Mo. (AP) — A man from the northern Missouri town of Mexico has died after his small plane crashed while taking off from a grassy runway.

The Mexico Ledger (http://bit.ly/xkZaPE) reports that David Dickherber was airlifted to the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia after the accident Sunday near Mexico. He died at the hospital.

His wife, Mary Ann Dickherber, is hospitalized in serious condition.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the single-engine 1979 Piper Cherokee failed to clear trees upon takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
