Pinewood Derby adds new event

Hand-sanded curves, customplaced axles, strategic weight placed in strategic locations. Hoping their car is the fastest, their design the coolest.

Cole Patterson and Sam Thompson, both third-grade Cub Scouts in Pack 12 at St. Martins, said they enjoy the annual Pinewood Derby, but each has their own approach.

“I look for a car in my toy box I like and design my car like it,” Patterson said.

Thompson, on the other hand, just lets his imagination run wild, like he did this year, though he said his uncle offered a little inspiration.
