FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Marlins newcomer Mark Buehrle was tagged for five runs in 2 1-3 innings and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Miami 5-0 Friday.
Buehrle allowed six hits and walked two in his second spring training start. He threw 70 pitches against what could be the Cardinals' opening day lineup.
Matt Holliday hit his first home run of the spring and is batting .500 in exhibition play.
Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook tossed four shutout innings, allowing two hits.
St. Louis first baseman Lance Berkman returned to action for the first time since Sunday and doubled. He'd been out with a sore left knee.
TIGERS 9, METS 0
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - New York Mets ace Johan Santana struggled for the first time this spring and was pulled in the third inning of a loss to Detroit.
Out of the majors last year while recovering from shoulder surgery, Santana had not allowed a run in his first two exhibition starts. But the two-time Cy Young gave up five runs - four earned - on four hits and two walks in 2 2-3 innings. He didn't have any strikeouts.
Santana retired his first four batters, but seven of the next 10 hitters reached base against the left-hander.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello threw four scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out three.
TWINS (SS) 2, RED SOX 1
Joe Mauer made his first spring training start at first base for a Minnesota split squad in a win over Boston.
The Twins' regular catcher went 1 for 2 with a walk. First baseman Justin Morneau went 0 for 4 as the designated hitter.
Red Sox ace Jon Lester struck out two, walked one and hit two batters in in four innings. He gave up two runs and five hits in his fourth spring training start.
Andrew Miller, recovered from a shoulder setback and still vying for a spot in the Red Sox's rotation, pitched a hitless inning.
ORIOLES 3, TWINS (SS) 1
FORT MYERS (AP) - Nick Blackburn had another impressive start, striking out three and allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings for a Minnesota Twins split squad in a loss to Baltimore.
The right-hander, who is coming off an inconsistent, injury-slowed 7-10 season, has given up four hits and no runs through seven innings this spring.
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who struggled late last year with a slight right labrum tear after coming over in a trade from the Rangers, went 2 for 4 with a double.
Baltimore's Chris Tillman gave up four hits and a run in three innings.
PIRATES 3, PHILLIES 2
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee allowed two home runs in 4 2-3 innings and was out pitched by Kevin Correia, who gave up one hit in four scoreless and led Pittsburgh to a win over Philadelphia.
Starling Marte took Lee deep in the first and later singled against the former Cy Young winner. Lee allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out five.
Correia, Pittsburgh's opening-day starter last year, breezed through a Philadelphia lineup without most of its stars. Hunter Pence was one of only a few Phillies regulars in the lineup, and he struck out twice in three at-bats.
YANKEES 4, NATIONALS 3, 10 INNINGS
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Gio Gonzalez pitched into the fourth inning and allowed one run for Washington in a loss to the New York Yankees on Friday.
Gonzalez gave up two hits and three walk in 3 1-3 innings. He had six strikeouts. The Nationals' new starter called the outing "a good stepping stone."
Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer for the Yankees. CC Sabathia was touched for three runs and six hits over three innings. Phil Hughes gave up three hits in four scoreless innings.
The Yankees announced Andy Pettitte has come out of retirement, signing a minor league contract with the team.
Washington manager Davey Johnson said right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, who strained his left hamstring fielding a grounder Thursday, will be out a couple weeks.
BLUE JAYS 5, RAYS 0
DUNEDIN, FLA. (AP) - Ricky Romero pitched four hitless innings and Toronto beat Tampa Bay.
Jeff Niemann, in the three-way scramble for one of the last two spots in Tampa Bay's rotation, gave up four runs in 3 1-3 innings. Niemann had allowed just two hits and no runs over five innings in two previous starts, but he gave up eight hits this time, including a pair of RBI singles to J.P. Arencibia.
Romero struck out four. Travis Snider hit his fourth spring home run, off Jhonny Nunez in the sixth inning.
GIANTS 3, CUBS 2
MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Eric Surkamp pitched four effective innings and San Francisco beat the Chicago Cubs.
Surkamp, who went 2-2 in six starts for San Francisco as a rookie last season, is a long shot to make the rotation this year. He gave up one run and four hits, striking out four.
Cubs starter Matt Garza allowed two runs and three hits in four innings.
DIAMONDBACKS 4, WHITE SOX 2
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run triple and Geoff Blum drove in two runs, leading Arizona to a win over the Chicago White Sox.
Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson allowed two runs and two hits in four innings. He walked one, hit a batter and struck out six.
Brad Zeigler worked a perfect ninth for the save.
John Danks, who signed a five-year, $65 million dollar contract extension in December, gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits. He walked two and struck out two in four innings.
Danks also hit a two-run single in the second inning.
MARINERS (SS) 6, BREWERS (SS) 1
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Felix Hernandez limited Milwaukee to one hit in six scoreless innings in his next-to-last outing before Seattle leaves for Japan, helping the Mariners beat the Brewers in a split-squad game.
Hernandez threw 80 pitches, 50 for strikes. He struck out six and walked one.
Hernandez will likely make his final spring start Wednesday before the team departs for Tokyo for two exhibition games and its season opener March 28 against Oakland.
Alex Liddi hit a two-run home run, and Dustin Ackley had three doubles for Seattle.
Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada allowed three runs and five hits in three innings.
ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS (SS) 1
PHOENIX (AP) - Josh Reddick hit a two-run double to key a four-run first and Oakland beat Seattle split-squad team.
Manny Ramirez added an RBI double and Colin Cowgill singled home a run for the A's, who lead the majors with 107 runs in their 15 games.
Oakland starter Graham Godfrey allowed a run after just three batters, but settled down to retire the final 11 hitters he faced. He gave up two hits and a one walk and had five strikeouts in 3 2-3 innings.
Hisashi Iwakuma, a Japanese League veteran fighting for the final spot in the Mariners' rotation, gave up five runs - three earned - on seven hits and a walk. He had three strikeouts.
Ichiro Suzuki was 3 for 4 and drove in Seattle's lone run.
ANGELS (SS) 7, INDIANS 0
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit his third home run of the spring and Garrett Richards kept up his push for the fifth spot in the Los Angeles Angels' rotation in a split-squad win over Cleveland.
Erick Aybar hit a leadoff homer in the first inning for the Angels. Two batters later, Pujols connected against Kevin Slowey.
Richards worked four scoreless innings, striking out six and giving up three hits without a walk.
Slowey, also competing for a spot in the rotation, allowed three runs and five hits in three innings.
PADRES 8, ANGELS (SS) 7
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Tim Stauffer gave up five runs in 2 2-3 innings, but Cameron Maybin had an RBI double in an eight-run seventh inning as San Diego rallied for a win over a Los Angeles Angels split squad.
In line to start on opening day, Stauffer allowed 11 hits and two walks.
Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo and catcher Hank Conger each had three hits. Conger also had an RBI. Los Angeles outfielder Ryan Langerhans went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Angels starting pitcher Brad Mills yielded only one hit in 3 2-3 innings.
ROYALS 9, BREWERS (SS) 4
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Luis Mendoza held Milwaukee's split squad hitless until the fifth inning and the Kansas City beat the Brewers.
Mendoza struck out seven in 4 2-3 innings. He allowed one run on two hits without a walk.
Mendoza was the Pacific Coast League 2011 pitcher of the year. He has given up one run and five hits in 10 2-3 innings in three spring starts, striking out 11 and walking one.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo allowed four runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batter in three innings.
DODGERS 5, RANGERS 2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - James Loney returned to the Dodgers' lineup and hit a three-run homer and made a nifty stop that led Los Angeles over Texas.
Loney did not play in games the previous three days because of tightness in his calf. Any worries about that lingering injury were gone in the first inning when Loney made a diving snag at first base on a hard grounder by Brad Hawpe.
Loney hit his first spring homer in the second, connecting against Greg Reynolds.
Dodgers starter Ted Lilly threw four scoreless innings, allowing one hit without a walk.
BRAVES 9, ASTROS 5
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - Jason Heyward hit a grand slam off Wandy Rodriguez for his second homer in three games and Michael Bourn had a two-run shot as Atlanta beat Houston.
Tommy Hanson, making his spring debut after having his first start cut shot by rain, pitched three innings and gave up two runs, including a homer by Travis Buck. The right-hander struck out three, walked none and gave up five hits.
Rodriguez hadn't pitched in 10 days because of a rainout and allowed five hits and a walk in a five-run first inning. He left with one out in the fourth after Bourn followed a second walk with his home run.
REDS 4, ROCKIES 3
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Matt Latos threw four scoreless innings and Drew Stubbs hit his first home run of the spring to help Cincinnati beat Colorado.
Latos allowed two singles and struck out three.
Stubbs hit a three-run homer off Alex White in the Reds' four-run second.
The Reds' Jay Bruce walked and scored but was held hitless for the first time in eight games this spring.
Bret Tomko, trying to make a comeback with the Reds, pitched three perfect innings.
Colorado scored three runs in the ninth.
