NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has agreed to spend $1.25 million to settle claims over a southwest Missouri contractor's disposal of unsold products such as charcoal, potting soil, herbicides and pesticides.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced the settlement Friday. Koster said the now-defunct Neosho contractor, Greenleaf LLC, lacked the necessary permit for treating, storing or disposing of hazardous waste. The company also was accused of failing to properly manage the waste materials.
Greenleaf and its owner were fined previously.
Under the settlement, Wal-Mart will pay about $214,000 in civil penalties and spend $1.05 million to sponsor pesticide collection events in rural Missouri.
Wal-Mart previously spent more than $3 million to clean up two southwest Missouri dump sites.
