SIKESTON, Mo. (AP) - The man killed in a shootout with Missouri state troopers has been identified.

The Sikeston Standard Democrat (http://bit.ly/Aa5LWR ) says 26-year-old Michael Thomas of Dallas died following an exchange of gunfire with Missouri State Highway Patrol officers Saturday night on Interstate 55. Patrol Cpl. Shane Stewart was shot but is expected to fully recover.

Thomas was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle stopped by the patrol. Stewart was speaking with one of the four occupants when a passenger began shooting at him, prompting the exchange of gunfire that killed Thomas. A second passenger, 18-year-old Maurice Ely of Mesquite, Texas, was injured.

Ely and the other two people in the SUV were charged Monday with second-degree murder and other crimes.
