Friday's NHL Capsules

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steve Sullivan scored the tying goal in the third period, and James Neal and Evgeni Malkin connected in the first two rounds of a shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to their eighth straight victory, 2-1 over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 28 shots and was perfect in the shootout for his 36th victory of the season, putting him one behind Nashville's Pekka Rinne for the NHL lead.

The Penguins extended the league's longest active winning streak by overcoming a third-period deficit for the eighth time this season, tied with Tampa Bay for the most in the league.

Pittsburgh is 20-4-1 in its last 25 games to pull within four points of the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers.

Thomas Fleischmann scored his 21st goal for Florida, and Jose Theodore made 33 saves but was outclassed in the shootout by Neal and Malkin, who easily beat Theodore over his glove on wrist shots.

BLACKHAWKS 4, RANGERS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Defenseman Johnny Oduya scored his first goal for Chicago with 5:56 left in the third period to snap a tie in the Blackhawks' comeback victory over New York.

Chicago handed the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers their third straight loss and fourth in five games.

Oduya connected from the left point with a shot that sailed past Henrik Lundqvist on the glove side to give Chicago a 3-2 lead, its first of the game. Oduya was acquired from Winnipeg just before the trade deadline.

Patrick Kane added an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left to make it 4-2. It stood up as the winner after New York's Brad Richards connected from the left circle 8 seconds later.

Chicago's Patrick Sharp scored 1:02 before Oduya to cap a nifty passing play with Marian Hossa and Kane, and tie it at 2. Rookie Andrew Shaw also scored to help Chicago win for the third time in four games.

Artem Anisimov and Brandon Prust also scored for New York.

RED WINGS 4, KINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Darren Helm scored with 1:13 left in regulation, lifting banged-up Detroit past Los Angeles.

Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg scored twice and assisted on Valtteri Filppula's tying goal with 4:02 left, less than 2 minutes after Dwight King put Los Angeles ahead 3-2.

Joey MacDonald made 21 saves for the Red Wings. Jonathan Quick stopped just 11 shots for the Kings.

Los Angeles pulled Quick to have an extra skater and had a 6-on-4 advantage on a power play with 23.2 seconds left and a faceoff in the Detroit end. The Kings got the puck, but MacDonald stopped Jeff Carter's shot with 15.2 seconds left and they could not get another shot on net.

Detroit had lost five of seven to slip behind Western Conference and Central Division-leading St. Louis.

The Kings, vying for one of the final spots in the Western Conference playoffs, have lost two straight after winning four of five.

FLAMES 5, JETS 3

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Miikka Kiprusoff made 42 saves to help Calgary beat Winnipeg in a showdown between teams fighting for playoff spots.

Alex Tanguay had a goal and three assists, and Jarome Iginla added a goal and two assists for the Flames.

Mark Giordano, Matt Stajan and Curtis Glencross also scored.

The Flames picked up five out of a possible six points on a three-game homestand to move into a three-way tie for ninth in the Western Conference with Colorado and Los Angeles, one point behind eighth-place San Jose.

Evander Kane, Blake Wheeler and Tobias Enstrom scored for Winnipeg. The Jets, coming off a loss Thursday night in Vancouver, are tied with Washington for eighth in the Eastern Conference. Winnipeg also is three points behind Southeast Division-leading Florida.
