Tuesday's NHL Capsules

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - David Clarkson and Ryan Carter scored 1:54 apart early in the third period, and the New Jersey Devils' slumbering offense broke out in a 4-1 victory over the NHL-leading New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

Clarkson tipped Petr Sykora's hard drive past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist at 2:27 to give the Devils their second lead of the game, and Carter pushed New Jersey ahead by two at 4:21. Carter, who has three goals this season, hadn't scored since Nov. 19 - a 37-game drought.

Carter also fought Brandon Dubinsky in the first period, a bout that knocked the Rangers forward out of the game with a hand injury. Ilya Kovalchuk also had a goal, and Patrik Elias made it 4-1 by scoring into an empty net with 1:53 left.

BLUE JACKETS 3, COYOTES 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jack Johnson scored his first goal for Columbus, Steve Mason made 38 saves and the Blue Jackets got their first three-game winning streak in more than a year.

Mason, who struggled all season until recently, has allowed just four goals in two wins over Phoenix and one over Colorado in the last six days.

R.J. Umberger and Derek MacKenzie also scored for the Blue Jackets. Johnson, acquired in the deal that sent Jeff Carter to Los Angeles just before the trade deadline, added an assist.

Antoine Vermette and Keith Yandle had goals for the Coyotes, who have lost four in a row in regulation, their longest such skid of the season.

BRUINS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Jordan Caron and Tyler Seguin scored two goals each and Boston beat Toronto for the fifth time this season.

Chris Kelly also scored and Tim Thomas stopped 25 shots to help Boston end a two-game skid.

Carl Gunnarsson, John-Michael Liles, Phil Kessel and Mikhail Grabovski scored for the Maple Leafs, who have been outscored 28-10 in the five meetings with the Bruins. Toronto has also lost six straight at home.

The Leafs played more than half the game with a short bench after losing forwards Joffrey Lupul and Colby Armstrong early in the second period. Lupul appeared to suffer a wrist injury after taking a check from David Krejci while Armstrong was bloodied in a fight with Dennis Seidenberg.

HURRICANES 4, CAPITALS 3, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Justin Faulk scored at 3:38 of overtime, Cam Ward stopped 46 shots, and Carolina beat skidding Washington.

Faulk took a centering pass from Brandon Sutter and fired the puck past goaltender Michal Neuvirth to saddle Washington with its third successive defeat, although the Capitals did get a point by forcing overtime late.

After suffering two straight shutout losses, both at home, Washington went ahead 2-0 before Carolina came back to take the lead on a breakaway goal by Sutter at 1:45 of the third period. The tally came after Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman took a futile whack at the bouncing puck in an effort to keep it in the Washington zone.

Washington forced overtime when Brooks Laich scored off a centering pass from Marcus Johansson at 17:08 of the third.

KINGS 5, PREDATORS 4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Justin Williams scored twice to lead Los Angeles to its third straigth win.

Drew Doughty, Matt Greene, and Trevor Lewis also scored for the Kings.

Patric Hornqvist scored twice and Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn had the other goals for Nashville, loser of two of its last three.

With the score tied 3-3 after two periods, Greene put the Kings ahead at 1:15 of the third on a slap shot from the right point. Lewis had a tap in from just off the left post at 3:00 to make it 5-3.

Hornqvist's 20th of the season pulled the Predators within one with 5:18 to go.

SENATORS 7, LIGHTNING 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Milan Michalek scored three third-period goals, helping Ottawa withstand a Tampa Bay comeback attempt.

Ottawa, which took a three-goal lead early on, went up 5-3 when Michalek scored a power-play goal at 12:12 of third. The left wing added two empty-goals, including a short-handed effort with 7 seconds left to give him 32 goals this season.

Tampa Bay got within 4-3 when Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 48th goal of the season during a power play at 5:41 of the third. The center has five goals and three assists during a five-game point streak.

Sergei Gonchar, Colin Greening, Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson had the other Ottawa goals. Michalek also had an assist, setting up Greening's goal with a nifty pass from behind the net.

BLUES 5, BLACKHAWKS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaroslav Halak won his sixth straight start to match a career best and St. Louis' penalty killers ran their streak to 32 stops in a row in a win against Chicago.

Andy McDonald scored two goals and Vladimir Sobotka had a short-handed score for the Blues, who are tied with the New York Rangers with a league-best 91 points pending Vancouver's late home game against Dallas. St. Louis is 27-4-4 at home for an NHL-best 58 points and retained momentum from a season-best 5-1 trip that established it's now a road presence, too.

Andrew Brunette scored his 10th goal and first since Jan. 2 for the Blackhawks.

FLYERS 3, RED WINGS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, and Max Talbot scored goals to lead thje Flyers.

Ilya Bryzgalov allowed a goal to Henrik Zetterberg on Detroit's first shot of the game. Johan Franzen made it 3-2 in the third.

The Flyers won on the night they retired former defenseman Mark Howe's No. 2 and raised the number to the rafters.

Detroit was short-handed as it continued to chase the top spot in the Western Conference standings. Leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk (59 points), captain Nicklas Lindrstom, forward Todd Bertuzzi and goalie Jimmy Howard all sat out with injuries.

FLAMES 5, CANADIENS 4

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Jarome Iginla scored his team-leading 26th and 27th goals to lead Calgary.

Iginla's second goal of the night with 1:18 left in the second period gave Calgary a 4-2 lead.

Curtis Glencross scored the eventual game-winner at 7:16 of the third period as Canadiens goalie Carey Price went behind the net and on his attempted backhand clear and put the puck right on the stick of Glencross, who scored his 23rd goal into the empty net to make it 5-2.

David Moss and Mark Giordano also scored for Calgary, which ended a five-game winless skid at home.

Max Pacioretty had two goals, Tomas Plekanec and Lars Eller scored for Montreal.

AVALANCHE 7, WILD 1

DENVER (AP) - Jamie McGinn scored the first of a four-goal flurry in the second period and Semyon Varlamov stopped 21 shots for Colorado.

Jay McClement, Jan Hejda, Mark Olver, Ryan O'Reilly, David Jones and Cody McLeod also scored for the Avalanche, who have won six of eight to climb back into the playoff picture.

Devin Setoguchi scored for the Wild on a penalty shot early in the third to break up Varlamov's shutout bid and Minnesota avoided being held scoreless for a third straight game.

Steve Downie had three assists, while Gabriel Landeskog added two for the Avalanche.

STARS 5, CANUCKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Mike Ribeiro scored twice and surging Dallas took the Pacific Division lead by beating Vancouver.

Ribeiro's 16th goal of the season midway through the third period provided insurance when he tipped a Michael Ryder pass behind goalie Roberto Luongo.

In the second period, he gave the Stars a 2-1 lead 2 minutes 53 seconds after Loui Eriksson tied the game for Dallas.

Jamie Benn gave Dallas a 3-1 lead after a Canucks defensive zone turnover. Stephane Robidas completed the scoring into an empty net.

Dallas won for the seventh time in eight games to end a five-game losing streak at Vancouver.

OILERS 3, SHARKS 2, SO

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Sam Gagner scored the only goal in the shootout to help the Edmonton Oilers snap a three-game losing streak in San Jose coach Todd McLellan's first game back from a concussion.

Jordan Eberle and Ryan Smyth scored in regulation for the Oilers. Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves and stopped all three San Jose attempts in the shootout as the Oilers dealt another blow to the Sharks playoff hopes.

Jim Vandermeer and Ryane Clowe scored in regulation for the Sharks, who have lost nine of 11 to drop from of first place in the Pacific Division to a three-way tie for eighth place in the Western Confernece. Antti Niemi made 26 saves, but couldn't stop Gagner's forehand shot in the second round of the shootout.
