Republic gets by Helias in second half

ROLLA, Mo. - They say defense wins championships. Both Helias and Republic took that mantra to heart when the teams met in a Class 4 state quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Missouri S&T.

Helias aimed to force contested shots, thus leading to Tiger misses. Republic looked to limit opportunities by forcing turnovers. Republic's approach won the day as the Lady Crusaders committed 22 turnovers in a 46-37 loss.

"It didn't end the way way we wanted it," Helias coach Doug Light said. "It was a tough ending for our kids. They brought Helias basketball back up and I'm really proud of them."

Helias' defensive intensity early on limited Republic to just 17 percent from the field in the opening half.
