New MLB playoff format could lead to strange postseason

Sports Commentary

Following the mantra that more is better, Major League Baseball got the go ahead late last week to expand its postseason from eight to 10 teams for the 2012 season.

Modeling itself after the other three major sports in the United States, baseball has decided the more opportunities for teams to get into the postseason the better.

For baseball executives, the decision seems obvious. It's presumed adding two teams to the postseason will create an extra sense of excitement among fans, while keeping teams in contention for a longer period of time. Thus, teams can make more money if they are in contention longer. The bottom line grows.

But in this case, is more really better?
