Your Opinion: Edict threatens religious freedom

Dear Editor:

In the past several weeks much was made of the fact that President Obama gave Catholic institutions and health care providers an entire year to study how to deal with the issue of providing contraceptive services, sterilization and abortifacient drugs for their employees.

In other words they have an entire year to decide how to violate their religious beliefs and consciences.

The First Amendment to the Constitution states in part: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ..."

Did we miss something here? If this prohibition refers only to Congress, would that allow the president to bypass Congress and by presidential edict or executive order do such? Does that mean that by such edict the president could trash the Constitution?

If he can trash the First Amendment how about the Second, which allows citizens to own firearms for personal protection, or the Fourth, which protects citizens from unreasonable search and seizures.

I submit that we are treading on very dangerous grounds. Our Constitution protects the people from big government overreach. Once we allow someone, be he/she an elected president, or a take-over tyrant, to take such illegal liberties with our Constitution, we will be well on the road to losing all our freedom.

We need to stand firm on the issue of religious freedom.
