Holts Summit cancels public fireworks display
Friday, June 29, 2012
The extreme dry conditions have led city officials in Holts Summit to cancel their public fireworks display for the Fourth of July.
The announcement came Friday morning.
Holts Summit joins California, Freeburg and St. Elizabeth in deciding to not do a public display.
Jefferson City is still planning to do their display to conclude the "Salute to America" festivities.

Thank God but there will always be that someone that HAS to set some off and cause a fire.

Smart thinking. Wonder if my neighbors will also cancel their annual drunken fireworks fest, complete with Roman Candle fights? The local fire departments are gonna be really busy with this year's hot dry conditions, and grass that crunches when you walk on it.
BTW: Can anyone tell me why the three or four fireworks sales tents are set up on the corner of Stadium and Edgewood? The News Tribune online editor said last year that the rock quarry was quietly annexed into the city limits, but if so, why are fireworks stands allowed to sell illegal fireworks inside the city limits?

Lifer, I suggest you use your hose on your neighbors, you know, in case you spot a spark that might blaze up. LOL Illegal fireworks? There have always been fireworks stands in the city limits hasn't there? I've bought them at a stand on Ellis before and I know that's in the city limits.

the stands on stadium and edgewood have been there for years BEFORE that area was annexed...when that happened those areas or spots were "grandfathered" in...therefore they have a total of 7 remaining years to be there then they supposedly must move on. I know bc we are in the business ourselves. The fireworks themselves are not illegal, just inthat area when that time frame is up they will not be able to sell there anymore

Too bad the "Jiggly Bars" weren't grandfathered too...

Just curious, has Jefferson City evern canceled the fireworks display? I don't recall that they have but someone I talked to said they have in the past.

Can we just let go of fireworks now? Stop wasting money on fireworks displays. I make this recommendation to both government and individuals.
Things go boom. Bright colors. Neato. If you've seen one fireworks display, you've seen them all, right?

It is an American tradition that we do here in AMERICA..if you don't like it please feel free to go to another country!!

I'm not moving to another country because I don't like fireworks. That's ridiculous.
What about small children who are scared of fireworks? I've seen plenty of little kids who don't seem to like fireworks any more than I do. Do you want to kick them out of the country, too?

"What about the small children who are scared of" bicycles, snakes, dogs, cats, squirrels, cows, horses, people in sunglasses, mail deliverers, UPS drivers, liberals, and democrats, yellow school buses, and so on?

You're doing it wrong if they all look the same.

I SECOND THIS! CHECK OUT PGI.ORG.....SOME OF MOST INCREDIBLE FIREWORKS AND DISPLAYS IN U.S. HAPPEN HERE.....
JCLifer 10 months, 4 weeks ago
I agree! Much better fireworks on TV, and you can watch 'em inside in the air conditioning and without the chiggers.

Bah Humbug Sequoia! Fireworks are awesome! If you are soooo disgusted, then why are in on this conversation? I do think that with the dry weather, the fireworks should be postponed until we get some rain.
Sequoia 10 months, 4 weeks ago
I'm in on this conversation because I have an opinion on fireworks, and I assume that, by definition, this conversation is not limited to those with a favorable view of fireworks.

=) I agree with the dry weather and the precautions.....as I am also PRAYING for rain....we shoot shows for our community and do NOT charge the people that want to come watch it....alot of times WE foot the bill and provide refreshments ALSO at no charge...bc its fun, family/community time and we enjoy seeing the peoples enjoyment.....we do ask for any donations they would LIKE to donate but do not require, nor expect it.....if you do not enjoy it, then do not be a party to it but dont bash everyone else that may enjoy the time spent watching and/or shooting them

Jeff City shoots theirs off over the river, so I can't see why they would cancel it...

Doesn't mean the sparks all stay over the water. At least they got a good chance to burn up Adrian's Island and kill some snakes.

I also love fireworks. I used to be able to see this JC fireworks from my yard, but the trees are now too high. My dogs hate them though, so they agree with Sequoia. :)

It's sad so many are cancelled, but my flowers are dying along with the grass. What I don't understand is why they just don't POSTPONE them until wetter weather. We don't HAVE to do it on the 4th of July. Celebrations for anything can be done on other dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc. - who wants to do them on a weekday) - so why not a fireworks celebration.
About JC - like one said earlier - it's on the river - chances of a stray are limited. But at over 100 degrees all this week, as much as I love it I probably won't be there. I do buy them, but will not shoot them right now.
About party time - hmm, wonder if they are talking about the Henley drunken fest. I have no doubt they WILL do it.
Sequoia - you have a right to your opinion but to even insinuate that our traditions be changed just because you don't agree with it is what offends some on here. I would not go to another country to live and expect them to change their traditions just because I didn't agree with them. But people on here are assuming you have 'come here' from another country. Maybe you were born here?
