When Skylar Lewis took a CPR class at Calvary Lutheran High School, he never expected to use those skills, much less receive a Youth Lifesaver Award.

Skylar Lewis receives a framed citation Tuesday recognizing his lifesaving efforts while accepting the Youth Lifesaver Award during the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter’s Lifesaver Awards program at the North Jefferson City pavilion.

On Mother’s Day weekend, Lewis used CPR skills he had just learned in January to save the life of a man at a horse show. He performed CPR on the man, who survived and was diagnosed with a faulty heart valve.

He was one of eight people honored in six categories Monday night by the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter.
