Before the Hartmans moved to Jefferson City's Woodward Lane eight years ago, they grew only cactus.
They soon exchanged their sun-lovers for shade plants to survive under the canopy of mature trees. In addition to learning the new varieties, including hosta, coral bells and lillies, the couple, through trial and error, developed dry creek beds to solve the lot's severe water drainage issues.
As the June Yard of the Month, today it is a swirling host of rocks of all shapes, colors and sizes lined with four seasons of foliage.
