Report: $48K missing from two jail accounts

A review of two accounts that had been managed by a former Cole County Sheriff’s Department jail clerk shows nearly $48,000 may have been taken from them.

The former clerk — Gina Freeman, 35, Jefferson City — was charged last month with stealing from those accounts.

At Wednesday’s Cole County Commission meeting, commissioners went over a review done by County Auditor Jim LePage, which concluded the account balances as of May 17 are inaccurate and are not where LePage’s office believes they should have been.

She will get off with a slap on the wrist. Law Enforcement needs to find a different way to collect money for bail. Requiring CASH is crazy and apparently the workers can't resist the temptation.
