Council endorses firefighter museum

The City Council has passed a resolution endorsing the concept of a new firefighter museum.

At the council meeting Monday, members passed the resolution to use the current animal shelter, being vacated this month, and the old fire station No. 2 on East Miller Street as the museum. The resolution specifies the animal shelter building would be used to house exhibits, while the fire station, which opened in 1935, would be modeled to showcase the history of the building itself.

City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus said the museum would be a way to increase tourism in the area and would act as a complement to the old Missouri State Penitentiary. Nickolaus said he has received a letter of support for the project from the East Side Business Association and has received calls from supporters who would like to find out ways to contribute to the project.

"I see it as an example of Jefferson City once again pulling itself up by its bootstraps," Nickolaus said.
