Spending plan pays dividends for New Bloomfield district
Tuesday, July 31, 2012
The New Bloomfield school district ended the 2011-12 school year with a 16 percent reserve in its budget, up 8 percent from where it began the year. The surge was thanks in large part to the spending plan the school board implemented the previous year.
But it stayed on track because of the fiscal responsibility of first-year Superintendent David Trammel and conscientious spending by staff members all around.
Trammel also notes that the district benefited from unexpected revenue increases.
“We had state money budgeted low and other areas that came in under budget,” Trammel said. “We kept a handle on spending, and I have to thank the teachers and staff for that.”
“They knew we were in a tight budget year, and they were mindful of that.”
Two areas Trammel and the district could spend on were the renovation of the high school parking lot and upgrades to the elementary school playground.
The parking lot was riddled with pot holes and the playground was given a face lift and brought up to American Disabilities Act code thanks to private funding and help from the New Bloomfield PTA.
