Redistricting leads to new petitions battle

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem spent an hour Thursday listening to legal arguments about how Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan should count the signatures on initiative petition proposals — then gave the lawyers until noon Monday to file any other arguments they might have.

Beetem’s hearing came just a week after Kansas City lawyer Eddie Greim filed a 14-page lawsuit against Carnahan on behalf of a Clay County man who’s against the proposed initiative petition that would limit the interest rates that “payday loan” businesses can charge.
